Skansen

Not far from the Meridian Column, you can find defensive structures directed towards the sea. They were built as a result of the Napoleonic wars in 1809 and restored in 1989. The old canon represents the effort by townspeople to defend Hammerfest from the attack of two British warships that eventually came to loot and destroy part of the town.

Nearby you find old barracks, a boathouse and an oil house (used as storage for the paraffin used in the lighthouse) thath were moved from Melkøya where the LNG plant is now located. Life in these kinds of barracks was very common from the Second World War up to the 1960s. For more information contact the Museum of Reconstruction.
